What is MQTT?

MQTT protocol is one of the simplest and light weight protocol used in the Internet of Things networks. MQTT supports small headers and can relay messages on low bandwidth connections in almost real time. It is most of the times implemented on top of a transport layer like TCP and it depends on the transport layer for all kinds of error checking and assurance of the packet delivery.

In this post i will be showing you how to write a simple piece of code using Arduino for SIM900 or SIM800 GSM GPRS module to receive and parse an incoming SMS and take action  based on the command present in it. The code is a simple demo of interpreting the data arriving on UART and you can apply this code example to process incoming data on UART of Arduino even if its connected to any other device like SIM900 or SIM800.

Last week the assembled boards have finally arrived and in no time I was able to get the VALTRACK-V2 up and running as the software was already written and tested for VALTRACK-V1 GPS tracker. Now i am able to test and run the SMS and GPRS version of VALTRACK-V2 without any problems. Even though everything went well with the design there were some issues which i will explain below.

This is a update post in the design of VALTRACK-V2 GPS tracker. The PCB i had sent for fabrication have arrived from PCB power and they are beautiful. I had ordered the boards in panel form, because PCB power doesn’t support boards of size lesser than 20mm. Since VALTRACK-V2 design came to be around 52mm x 18mm, I had to accept their offer of making the PCB in the form of a panel instead of separate boards.

SIM800 series Bluetooth AT commands
